Roger L. Bathke - Rome Sentinel

Bathke, 92, of Rome, passed away Tuesday, April 2, 2019 after a brief hospital stay with family constantly by his side. He was born May 30, 1926 in Utica, NY the son of Augestus and Nellie Truax Bathke. He attended Holland Patent Schools. Roger served with the 3159th signal service battalion during WWII. On February 17, 1945 he married Helen Slocum in St. Mary’s Church, Rome, a loving union lasting 71 years. She died December 11, 2016. Roger was a machinist at the Rome Developmental Center for many years until his retirement. Roger was a member of VFW Post 2246 American Legion Post 0024, Rome, NY and a 50 year member of Stanwix Heights Volunteer Fire Department.Roger’s family would like to thank members of the Rome VFW who always made Roger feel welcome and one of the guys for too many years to mention, especially Red. Roger had many friends that he kept in touch with throughout the years. Some have passed on but one remains, Carl. Roger’s brother Benny and family were very good to him and Helen, always inviting them to their home for parties and visits. Thank you Michelle and Fred. Roger’s neighbors were always the best, ready to mow lawn or shovel snow, getting their mail or anything that needed to be done while Roger was away. Thank you Fred. Roger was very much loved and an important part of the family. He would do anything for his family and was capable of fixing anything. Roger is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Bathke Bauer; three grandchildren, Lisa Bauer, John and Kristiane Bauer, and Amy Bauer and Justin Knutti; three great-grandchildren, Evan Bauer, Wesley Knutti and Kendall Knutti. Roger was predeceased by four brothers and one sister and a son-in-law, Thomas Bauer. Graveside services will be held at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rome with military honors at a time to be announced.
